Love this shot of her in her jammies. Why don't I look like this first thing in the morning??
So we've been parents for three years now, not newbies by any stretch but we are still amazed and impressed by what our girl does as any parent is. The other day in the bath Jeff was holding her alphabet letters out of the blue asked her if she knew what color the 'B' was. "O-range!" she proclaimed without hesitation. She was right, so he continued and before you know it she had named the correct color for 16 out of 20 letters. Now they come in about 5 colors and neither of us could remember the color of any of them nor had we ever talked about the colors of them with her. She just knew - we were dumbfounded.
Also about 6 months ago we had started talking with her about stopping using her Binky (pacifier) at sleep time as it is bad for her teeth. She announced, "I'll stop when I'm three". We've discussed it since and she always gave the same answer, "I'll stop when I'm three". Fast forward to the last 2 months and she started seeking out her Binky from her bed during the day when we were upstairs. She would be sucking on it like she was getting a fix and tell me that she was just cleaning a hair off it. Uh-huh. So we started putting it up during the day so she couldn't find it. Then the last week or so before her birthday she was still saying she would quit when she was three and we reminded her that that was pretty soon. So on her birthday after she got up Jeff took it when she wasn't around with no discussion. We had no intention of holding her to her word on her birthday and making her upset. We're not that mean. But she took her nap and went to bed that night without asking for it or any fuss. She just sang some songs in bed and went to sleep. A few days later she asked if Miles will use a Binky when he's two. Answer no as he's never used one but that's not the important part. What hit me is that she was thinking about it even though we hadn't discussed it. I know how much she liked it but she said she would be done at three and she was. Just writing it again makes me let out an 'Ahhh' and put my hand over my chest all weepy-like. Moral of the story: turning three was a big deal for her and us. xoxo Iris!
Wipe-wipe, here's the pics of the party.
Iris had to eat with the big girls outside. Note this is the only picture of her in her birthday dress before she supposedly got some imperceptible something on it and demanded to change. Jeff took her upstairs and she reappeared in the same dress from her second birthday party. Oh well. It was cute, can you tell?
Here's a super-long video of Iris looking for clues for a buried treasure we made. Needless to say, we were busy for a couple evenings crafting with glue, cardboard, tinfoil, markers and rhymes. For months Jeff has been having to craft many versions of buried treasure bedtime stories EVERY night so it seemed like a no-brainer. It was really an amalgamation of buried treasure, Blues Clues, and Dora the Explorer. She was pretty excited about it and said it was her favorite thing from the party - Score!
She wanted a cake with balloons, she got a cake with balloons:
